  Fanning Island Outreach

If ever you have a burning desire to escape western civilization
and are in dire need of experiencing one of the most remote,
pristine, shark-infested, coconut-bearing, muddy, monsoon-prone, equatorial, mosquito-infested Pacific island in the world, possibly pay a visit to Fanning Island in the Kiribati Republic. Now that does not mean that I encourage everyone to abandon their realities of office life and the kids and hop on a plane straight for this tropical paradise. Actually, even if you wanted to, it is impossible to fly to Fanning due to the lack of a functioning airstrip which has been overgrown by jungle since it was abandoned ten years ago.  If you are, however, an adventurous soul who believes "where there's a will there's a way", possibly you could hitch a ride on a freight ship from one of the other 40 islands in the Kiribati Republic, but good luck, as it is quite unpredictable and questionably seaworthy according to the locals.

Well, at any rate, Fanning Island is precisely the location our Water For Life team landed to help provide training and assistance using simple water technologies for the 2,000-plus people inhabited on this Pacific atoll island.  We encountered the hospitality and joy of the islanders, had the privileged to eat fish and crab for breakfast, lunch and dinner; all while working alongside the local communities to help provide a sustainable solutions for some of the water issues facing Fanning.  It was a cherished time by everyone involved!
